Lawn De-Thatching

Thatch is the layer of living and dead stems, roots, stolons, and rhizomes between the green blades of grass and the soil surface.

A thin layer of thatch (less than 1/2 inch thick) can be beneficial to the lawn because it helps to limit weed germination, reduce water evaporation, and protect from frost damage. De-thatching is an organic process to improve your turf grass health.

Power de-thatching:
Take action when thatch layer is over 1/2" thick
or when grass blades begin to yellow. Benefits include:

• Stronger turfgrass roots
• Improved air and water infiltration
• Enhanced heat and drought tolerance
• Deters pests and fungal growth

Power Raking:
Is typically done each spring. Benefits include:

• Clears winter dieback
• "Wakes up" the turfgrass from dormancy

Lawn Aeriation

Aeration, technically speaking is the natural process of air exchange between the soil and its surrounding atmosphere.

Practically speaking, aeration is the process of mechanically removing small plugs of thatch and soil from the lawn to improve natural soil aearation. This process is commonly called “core aeration”.

How often to do this:

Once or twice per year depending on soil and thatch conditions.

When to do this:

• In Spring for better soil/water intake
• In Fall to promote deep root growth

Proscape installs quality underground sprinkler systems using the best products on the market. The Wisconsin summer months do not provide enough water continually to your turf; 1 inch per week for Kentucky Bluegrass (the most commonly used turf).
